Welcome to Arthur Avenue.com, home of the
original, time-honored Mike's Deli located in New York City’s landmark
Arthur Avenue Retail Market for over 50 years. Please visit us in the
heart of New York’s Real Little Italy, Arthur Avenue (known as the Belmont
Community, in the Fordham section of the good old Bronx).
Our neighborhood
dates back to a time when thousands of Italian immigrants came through
Ellis Island, many settling in "Belmont." Here they discovered
a welcoming mass of paesani. Within this neighborhood, they would
find a comfort zone, an arena of familiarity to remind them of their homeland.
They planted their roots through family, church, housing and work;
All linked by their zealous Italian passion for good food! Many early
Italians in Belmont, made their living by working and selling products
from pushcarts, most often food items. In 1940, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia
built the indoor Arthur Avenue Market to take the street vendors out of
the cold.
Nearly
100 years later, the passion for good food in Belmont still continues.
We are proud to say that our neighborhood has become one of America’s
great food centers. Our streets smell of freshly baked bread, garlic,
coffee, cookies and aromatic cheeses. It is very possible that your
relatives (or maybe you) have passed through our streets. We proudly
now offer these wonderful delicacies, not from a warehouse but straight
from our neighborhood store. Due to the overwhelming demand for our
products, we've designed
this website for those of you who cannot pay a visit to the old neighborhood,
but still want to mangia bene, vivi bene --eat well, live well!
